Rome money

In common with many European countries, the currency in Italy is the Euro. You'll find that in Rome money can be changed at banks, foreign exchange bureaus, ATMs or your hotel, although this later especially is likely to give you a poor exchange rate.

ATMs can also be expensive as they can attract a high fixed fee - €25 is not uncommon with some cards.

Use of credit cards

Credit cards are not as widely used in Italy as the United States. Always check that you can pay by card in a restaurant and you may be able to negociate better prices in shops by offering cash.

Currency restrictions

Although there are no restrictions on the amount of money you import to Italy you may export currency up to a value of €12,500.

You should therefore declare the import of larger amounts to customs, which allows you to export the same amount.
