Rome restaurants

If you love Italian food then be sure to sample some of the regional specialities available in Rome restaurants.

Italy is well known for its food and there is perhaps nowhere better to try the variety of the country than in its capital.

There are several types of restaurant, all of which you will encounter while in Rome. It can be helpful to know what to expect before deciding on where you are going to eat:

  • Trattoria - serves home-style cooking and is often family run
  • Ristorante - a wider selection of dishes and more formal
  • Osteria - an inn, often with a few local dishes
  • Pizzeria - as well as pizza they can serve pasta and other dishes

As well as being the home of pasta and pizza - naturally the majority of Rome restaurants offer these - each area in Italy has its own distinct cuisine and the cosmopolitan nature of Rome means that each area is represented.

In addition to food, Italy is a major producer of wine and liqueurs such as grappa and is home to the short, dark shots of espresso coffee.

Many dishes that are considered quintessential Italian have their origins in the provinces - well-known dessert tiramisu, for example comes from Turin, the old Italian capital, as do the variety of breadsticks baked help cure a sick child-prince, later the first King of Piedmont - or so legend tells us.
